A little help along the way

Let’s keep you practicing.

Answers to common questions about Shadowy, the language shadowing app from HINODE GIKEN K.K.

How do I start?

Complete the introduction and sign in with Apple, Google, or an email and password, then choose a starter lesson from Explore or import your own text. Open a sentence, listen to the reference voice, and record yourself repeating it.

How do I import text?

Paste a passage, choose an image from your photo library, or take a photo of printed text. Review the recognized text before saving. Clear, well-lit images with straight text work best.

Why can’t I hear the reference voice?

Check your device volume and audio output, including connected headphones. Reference audio is created online. If it couldn’t be created, for example because you were offline, Shadowy uses your device’s built-in speech voice, so check that a voice is installed for your chosen language. Try another sentence or restart the app.

Why is my audio still being created?

After you import text or add a starter lesson, Shadowy creates natural-sounding audio for each sentence on our server. This needs an internet connection and can take a little while. If you allow notifications, we’ll let you know when your audio is ready or if it couldn’t be created. Notifications are optional; audio is created either way. Once downloaded, the audio plays offline.

Why won’t my microphone or camera work?

Open your device’s Settings, find Shadowy, and enable the permission for the feature you want to use. Microphone access is needed for recording. Camera and photo permissions are optional; you can paste text instead.

Where is my pronunciation score?

Pronunciation scores are part of Shadowy Pro in the iPhone app. Sign in with the account you subscribed with, then record a take; the score appears under the sentence a few seconds later. If it says the take couldn’t be scored, check your connection and tap it to try again. Takes longer than 60 seconds can’t be scored.

Where is my practice saved?

Your lists, recordings, scores, settings, and practice days are saved with your account, so they appear on your iPhone and at shadowyapp.xyz/app. The iPhone app keeps a copy for offline practice and saves offline changes to your account when you’re back online.

How do I remove my data?

To delete your account and everything saved with it, open Settings in the iPhone app and choose Delete account, or choose Delete account in the account menu at shadowyapp.xyz/app. If you have a Shadowy Pro subscription, cancel it in Manage billing first. Deleting a list on the website also deletes its takes and recordings. Deleting the app removes only its copy on your phone, not your account.
